The dark-nights myth: winter car crime is local, not national

When the clocks go back, does vehicle crime really surge? Nationally, barely — town centres run just -3.2% higher in the darkest months. But that average hides a dramatic split: 16 towns genuinely spike in winter, while 24 run the other way entirely.

The short answer

Comparing the darkest three months on record (Nov 2025, Dec 2025, Jan 2026) with the lightest (Apr 2026, May 2026, Jun 2026) across 88 town centres: national vehicle crime moves just -3.2%. But Liverpool recorded 230 winter crimes against 73 in summer — a 215% jump — while seaside and market towns often peak in summer instead, when visitor car parks fill. Whether dark nights matter depends almost entirely on where you park.

The lesson for drivers isn't "relax" — it's that risk is local and seasonal in ways the national headlines never capture. Find your town below: if it winters badly, the months ahead are exactly when a visible deterrent and a signal-blocking pouch earn their keep.

Method: crimes within 1 mile of each town centre (theft of/from vehicles and interference), street-level police records. Towns with fewer than 30 summer crimes excluded from percentage rankings to avoid small-number noise. Town-centre radius means daytime shopping-area crime is included — residential driveway patterns can differ. Scotland not covered (no street-level data published). See methodology.
