The junctions Britain never fixed

A collision at a junction can be bad luck. A collision at the same junction in five consecutive years is a design problem nobody has dealt with. We filtered every police-reported collision for exactly that pattern: 80 sites across 42 towns and cities qualify, between them accounting for 1,432 collisions and 1,750 casualties.

The short answer

The worst is Brixton Hill, Brixton on the A23 in London: 57 collisions and 63 people hurt over five years, with casualties recorded in every single one. 7 of these 80 sites have killed someone. Every one of them has been visible in the official data the whole time — the records are published annually, free, by the Department for Transport. What is missing is not the evidence but a mechanism that turns a five-year pattern into a scheme.

The 120 worst persistent sites. Circle size reflects collisions; red means at least one death.

Method, and its limits

How we decided a site counts

We cluster police-reported injury collisions to roughly 100 metres and keep only clusters recording collisions in every one of the 5 years in the dataset. That persistence filter is the whole point: it removes the sites that had one bad year and keeps the ones that keep happening.

Three honest caveats. Busy junctions carry more traffic, so some of this reflects exposure rather than design alone. Clustering to 100m can merge two nearby junctions into one site. And a site may have been treated recently, with the scheme too new to show in the data — if you know of work at any location listed, tell us and we will note it.
