The best steering wheel locks, ranked by attack rating — not looks
Buy an attack-rated lock or don't bother: unrated bars bend or pick in seconds and mostly sell paint. Sold Secure Diamond is the benchmark, and only a handful of automotive locks hold it. Before you order anything full-cover, measure your wheel and check you are buying the right-hand-drive version — those two mistakes account for most returns in this category.
Ranked by evidence, not by commission

The criteria — and what we don't do
- ✓A current, checkable rating first. Sold Secure Diamond > Gold, and a Thatcham category is a different scheme rather than a lower grade — we say which one each product actually holds.
- ✓Visibility second — police data shows most theft is target selection, and a lock the thief can see works before the attack starts
- ✓Fit-time third: a lock that's awkward stays in the boot. Seconds matter more than grams.
- ✓Prices are indicative at publish (August 2026) — check the listing. We hold no stock of these and take no payment for placement.
Ratings are Sold Secure's and Thatcham's own, checked September 2026. Sold Secure lists only six automotive steering wheel locks; a product can also hold a Thatcham category without being in the Sold Secure database, which is not the same thing. Before you buy
Is Sold Secure Diamond really worth it over Gold?
Diamond means the lock survived a longer, harder tool attack in independent testing. For street-parked or keyless cars the difference is worth £20; for a driveway car behind other layers, Gold is a reasonable saving.
Do steering locks work on keyless cars?
Yes — that's exactly where they matter most. Relay theft defeats the car's electronics silently, but no electronics defeat hardened steel. Pair with a Faraday pouch to close both routes.
Why isn't the cheapest lock on Amazon listed here?
Because it's unrated. Unrated locks routinely fail to basic tools in seconds, and a lock that fails is worse than none — it buys false confidence. Our floor is an independent Sold Secure rating.
