Nottingham's serious collisions, ward by ward
818 people were killed or seriously injured on Nottingham's roads over 2021–2025, 25 of them fatally. We mapped all 769 collisions to their council ward. Half of them happened in just 7 of the city's 20 wards.
The short answer
Serious road injury in Nottingham is concentrated, not spread. Hyson Green & Arboretum alone recorded 74 serious or fatal collisions in five years, more than the ten safest wards put together (238). Collisions track the road network rather than population: the A60, A610 and B682 run through most of the worst-affected wards. And the direction of travel is wrong, with the city total up 59% since 2021.
Every figure here comes from the Department for Transport’s STATS19 records, the police record of injury collisions, point-matched to current ONS ward boundaries. Slight-injury collisions are excluded: this counts people killed or seriously injured (KSI). Full method.

Five findings from 769 serious collisions
1. Half the city’s serious injuries happen in a quarter of its wards
7 of Nottingham’s 20 wards account for half of every serious and fatal collision in the city. The five worst (Hyson Green & Arboretum, St. Ann's, Castle, Lenton & Wollaton East, Radford) carry 329 between them, which is 43% of the total from 25% of the wards. At the other end, the 10 wards making up the safer half record 238 between them.
2. The trend is going the wrong way
Serious and fatal collisions rose from 108 in 2021 to 172 in 2025, a change of +59% across the period, peaking at 174 in 2023. Traffic volumes recovering after 2021 explain part of any rise, but not all of it on roads whose layout has not changed.

3. One road runs through the problem: the A60
Counting every ward it passes through, the A60 accounts for 59 serious and fatal collisions across 6 separate wards. A corridor-wide approach would reach more people than any single junction scheme.
| Road | KSI collisions | Wards affected |
|---|---|---|
| A60 | 59 | 6 |
| A610 | 41 | 4 |
| B682 | 33 | 4 |
| A6008 | 32 | 2 |
| A6514 | 29 | 6 |
| A609 | 22 | 3 |
| A611 | 22 | 6 |
| A453 | 18 | 3 |
Counts the first road recorded on each collision, so collisions on unclassified roads are absent from this table but included in ward totals.
4. Volume and lethality are different problems
Hyson Green & Arboretum records the most serious collisions in Nottingham (74), but Leen Valley is where a collision is most likely to kill: 3 of its 31 serious collisions were fatal, a rate of 10%, against a city average of 3%. 6 wards recorded no fatal collision at all in five years. Speed is usually what separates the two groups: outer wards see fewer collisions, at higher speeds, with worse outcomes.
5. Some wards are moving fast, in both directions
Comparing 2021 with 2025 for wards with a meaningful base, the swings are large enough to be worth asking about before they harden into a trend.
Rising fastest
- St. Ann's8 → 20 (+150%)
- Lenton & Wollaton East7 → 12 (+71%)
- Radford10 → 16 (+60%)
- Hyson Green & Arboretum17 → 24 (+41%)
- Bilborough5 → 5 (0%)
Falling fastest
- Dales5 → 2 (-60%)
- Sherwood6 → 4 (-33%)
- Bulwell10 → 8 (-20%)
- Aspley7 → 6 (-14%)
- Basford7 → 6 (-14%)
Wards with fewer than five collisions in 2021 are excluded: percentage swings on tiny numbers are noise, not signal.
