If the other driver had no insurance or left the scene, it can feel hopeless — but a route to compensation still exists. Here's how it works.
Being hit by someone with no insurance — or a driver who speeds off — is deeply frustrating. But you're not necessarily left to foot the bill yourself.
The Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB)
The MIB exists to compensate victims of uninsured and untraced drivers. It's funded by a levy on every insurance policy, and it can cover injury and, in many cases, vehicle and other losses where there's no insurer to claim against.
Uninsured driver claims
If you have the other driver's details but they had no valid insurance, a claim can be made against the MIB for your injuries and losses, much like a normal claim.
Untraced (hit-and-run) driver claims
If the driver can't be identified — for example a hit-and-run — a separate MIB scheme can still compensate you for injuries, and sometimes damage. Reporting the incident to the police is an important step here.
Don't assume you can't claim
